After a long cold winter of being stuck in doors, summer activities like playing at the beach, camping and BBQs are on our mind. Summer is the best and busiest time to travel. With all the fun activities, great food, and vacations ahead of you, how can you say healthy while still hitting your fitness goals?

After I did my last fitness competition, I planned a trip to the beach in Florida. I was exhausted from all of the dieting, training I did leading up to my show. I knew this vacation was a much-needed reset. However, I also recognized that after coming from a phase of dieting, if I was not careful the work, I put in leading up to my show could be quickly lost. These are the tips I followed to help have a healthy vacation with out feeling deprived.

Tip #1 Stay at a hotel or Airbnb that has a kitchen. While in Florida we picked a cute cottage to stay at. This allowed me to go to the store and fill up on all the healthy foods I love. I packed the fridge with salads, fresh fruit, sushi, eggs and other yummy things I enjoy. For dinner we grabbed steaks, kabobs, and other yummy meats that we could grill. The place we stayed at had all of the cooking utensils and things needed to make delicious meals. Not only did we save a ton of money doing this, but we also all significantly cut down on sneaky calories we would have consumed eating out.

Tip #2 Add in colorful fruits and vegetables you don’t normally have. While staying at our Airbnb, I was thrilled to find that a mango tree was in the back yard. This allowed me to pick a mango every day and add it to my breakfast. An easy way to not feel deprived on vacation is to focus on adding in some yummy fruit and veggies before eating those chips, cookies, or potato salad. You can absolutely still have yummy treats but adding in these things first, do a couple things. First, it will help you eat less of your treats. Second, it will help you get in the vitamins and minerals your body needs.

Tip #3 Do some type of movement every day. I love the saying, “motion is lotion”. Our joints respond well to movement, there is a reason why people feel stiff after laying around or sitting too long. While on vacation focus on doing some type of movement every day, swimming, fishing, dancing, running, walking. Being on vacation isn’t a reason to stop all physical activity. However, it doesn’t mean you can’t switch up your work out and try different activities. If you are a gym lover and hate missing your work outs, call around to a gym near by and request a weeklong pass. I joined Anytime Fitness for $35 and felt amazing training before hitting the beach.

Tip #4 Enjoy yourself but don’t go crazy. I routinely remind my clients that dogs get rewarded with treats, not humans. I am all for having some treats, a few drinks and enjoying life but doing it too frequently can add up in no time. While on vacation pre decide how many treats you ae going to have. Deciding beforehand makes people more likely to stick with their decision. I like to allow myself 1 treat everyday when I’m on vacation. That way ice cream, fries, and other yummy treats are enjoyed in moderation.
Everyone needs a vacation from time to time, just don't let it be a reason to forget about all of your fitness goals.
